about us – doncaster music education hub

Doncaster Music Education Hub is a collection of local partners lead jointly by Doncaster Music Service and darts

Our vision for Doncaster includes a thriving musical offer for all children and young people, with a wealth of exciting performance opportunities, challenging and appropriate progression routes, an inspirational workforce of music leaders across all genres and embedded regional and national partnerships.

Music Hubs were established in every local authority area in England in line with the National Plan for Music Education, ‘The Importance of Music’, by the Department for Education (DFE) and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) in 2011. Since then Ofsted has outlined the role that hubs must play in school improvement with the report ‘Music in schools: what Hubs must do’ in 2013.

The Education Inspection Framework was updated in September 2019, with opportunities to focus on music in ‘personal development‘ where ‘the curriculum extends beyond the academic, technical or vocational. It provides for learners’ broader development, enabling them to develop and discover their interests and talents’.

The new Ofsted framework requires schools to consider how they develop their children’s cultural capital to help them succeed in life.

All Music Education Hubs must deliver the roles outlined by the National Plan for Music Education, which are funded by Arts Council England:

Core Roles

  1. Ensuring every child between the ages of 5 and 18 has the opportunity to learn a musical instrument.
  2. Providing opportunities to play in ensembles.
  3. Ensuring that clear progression routes are available and affordable.
  4. Developing a singing strategy so that every child sings regularly.

Extension Roles

  1. Offering CPD to school staff to help deliver the music curriculum.
  2. Providing an instrument loan service.
  3. Providing access to large-scale and/or high quality experiences including working with professional musicians and publicising musical performances for young people.

Doncaster Music Education Hub is a partnership of over 25 organisations. As well as schools, academies and Doncaster Council, the partnership is built up of a varied range of organisations and music providers.

In addition to the lead partners: Doncaster Music Service and darts, our national and regional partners include Yorkshire Youth & Music, Opera North, IVE, Charanga, Doncaster Youth Jazz Association, University Centre Doncaster, Higher Rhythm, Cast (Performance Venue), The William Appleby Trust, Music in the Round, the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, Orchestras Live, Rainbow Connections and Music for Youth.

We are also involved in a partnership with the Royal Opera House through local partners Cast. Other partners include charitable trusts, community arts organisations, small businesses, and local music groups.
